I am a long term holder and have been concerned about the dollar hedge ever since it became very apparent the US was headed for long-term decline with the resultant loss of its reserve currency status. I held nonetheless as a diversification move since the vast majority of my other investments were either directly overseas or in unhedged funds. While I still beileve in the long-term dollar decline, I hold TB just in case I am wrong about the dollar. They are as good a place as any for a solid dollar-denominated investment.

I have owned the Global fund for years, and sold half last year.
This is an underperformer for sure....their hedging strategies cost, and their reluctance to invest in energy stocks and commodities is foolhardy. Better off in a low cost S&P index fund. A big disappointment after those early glory years. The expense ratios are too high, with little added value in active management.

I also just finished Chris Browne's book and I agree with every thing you've said. I have only one suggestion...the book goes into great detail on how to find/pick value stocks. I wish it would have discussed strategies for when to sell.

As for the tweedy funds...I'm more inclined to buy the global fund given Chris' comments about increasing their chances of finding value opportunities. It also sounds like the average value investor would not easily recognize some of these foreign opportunities due to differences is accounting practices (see book for example). For these reasons I might be willing to "hire" Tweedy.

As far as the domestic fund goes...I was a bit surprised to see it did not outperform the S&P500 during the last year. Perhaps the time period was not long enough.

Comments welcome...

Just finished reading The Little Book of Value Investing by one of TBGVX's portfolio managers, Chris Browne. He reinforces why I like the company and the fund---a lot of common sense backed up by research. And he even makes a lucid case for why TBGVX continues to hedge into the US dollar.

Wonderful book, and a quick read. Published in 2007 by John Wiley & Sons.

If you had loked at the Tweedy Browne website you would not be scared today!

On 12/28 they paid a $3.352 distribution (total) per share for record holders of 12/27. TGBVX was actually up about 7 cents. The money will probably be credited to your account on monday. This happens every year with every mutual fund.
