Inflation or stagflation is on the rise. This TIPS fund PRIPX did not suffer as bad as most other funds. I dont think there is much confidence in the stimulus and I think funds like PRULX (24% gain 2008)and PRTIX (14% gain 2008)which are treasury bond funds will continue to do well.

Steve Goldberg on Kiplinger.com "Time for TIPS" states that the ETF "TIP" will drop in price by about seven percent if interest rates on Treasuries rise by one percentage point. He continues on talking about the Vanguard fund and says that the fund will react the same to a rise in Treasury rates.
Since Treasuries are about as low as they can go, aren't we almost "guaranteed" a loss in the fund/ETF's value?

Good posts ..... I like the insights on the economy. Inflation is here and will be for a while. Chryslers $2.99 is a damn joke. If the auto industry was worth anything it would start producing all (including trucks) with mileage per gallon @ 40mpg. We have the technology because water powered cars (Honda Accord) and trucks .... yes trucks (Chevy). I saw a water powered Chevy the other day in my hometown of Eagle River, Alaska. I remember the 70's gas crunch my parents went through .... and it looks like we are stumbling on the same thing today. And car mileage has not changed much ..... wake up America and stop ripping off the consumer with crappy mileage produced cars .... anything under 40mpg is a joke.

I agree completely. I don't think it is even an issue of simply underreporting how bad inflation is. They seem be able to change the criteria by which they measure inflation in a given month. Last month had energy prices lower (because of seasonal "adjustments"), even though prices at the pump went higher. I personally think overall inflation is running anywhere between 6-9% annually. I don't look at the core rate, since last time I looked, those expenses need to get paid every month.

I was under the impression that the core rate (excluding food and energy) was intended to smooth out volatility. But that was back in the days when volatility meant up months followed by down months, etc. In the current environment of an obvious continuing uptrend, the core rate does not mean anything these days.

But I am no economist...just seems like common sense to me. I think PRIPX should do well once reality sets in.

Regards,

RJ

If commodities and oil begin to sell-off due to the strengthening of the dollar this fund is certainly going to sell-off quickly, and that could had started Thursday 4-24 going into the Fed meeting next week with a possible no rate cut!

Did u see the sell-off in oil and commodities today?

It's rocked over the past year because people were pessimistic that inflation would be controlled any time soon. This should be one position in a diversified portfolio. Me? I have a mix of different types of bonds. Since my horizon is pretty long, I have a chunk of my IRA in a conservative junk bond fund (PAXHX), an aggressive emerging markets fund (PREMX), and a smaller position in PRIPX. For my taxable account, my entire bond position is in PRTAX, which is alternative minimum tax (AMT) free, and pretty conservative to boot. It's nice to see PRIPX do well, but every dog has its day...

I'll be the first to proclaim that I have found a fund that thrives in adversity. Its up over 5% for the year for me. When I see red in the DOW, I just smile and say looks like another profitable day for me. :)
