SWPPX 2009 dividend

SWPPX paid a dividend on 12/10. It worked out to $.244/share.

Note that this is the second dividend this year. Right before the merge/consolidation, my previous fund (ISLCX) paid a dividend as well. I assume that was a partial year dividend, necessary to "clear the books" for the consolidation. Adjusting for the merger's reverse split, the September dividend was $0.227/share (in terms of SWPPX). So SWPPX paid a total of $0.472/share this year. Using the pre-dividend price (from 12/8), that works out to 2.74%.

In 2008 my predecessor fund (ISLCX) paid the equivalent (again in terms of reverse split-adjusted SWPPX) of $0.414/share. Using the same pre-dividend date price concept (realizing that price was from the depths of the autumn 2008 market crash), the 2008 yield was 1.64%.

I owned another Schwab S&P500 index style fund...ISLCX...that also got combined into SWPPX.

Turns out there were 3 Schwab funds that were combined into SWPPX. The 3 funds that went into it were SWPEX, SWPIX and ISLCX.

Schwab was doing a lot of fund consolidation in Aug to Oct 2009. A webpage at Schwab lists all the consolidations:
http://www.schwab.com/public/schwab/research_strategies/mutual_funds/funds/schwab_funds_mutual_fund_consolidations.html

It appears the FAQ on that webpage explains why they did this:
"Q: If my symbol is changing, do I own the same fund?
A: Yes! Many Schwab Funds used to have multiple share classes with tiered fees—share classes with higher minimum investment amounts offered a lower OER. When we eliminated tiered fees and made funds available with a $100 minimum investment, we ended up with more than one symbol for a fund with identical features and expenses, so we are eliminating the extra symbols. The underlying portfolios in the collapsing and surviving symbols for a fund are identical".

Another "stealth" move by Schwab. Today's decline is apparently due to a distribution which will appear tomorrow.

Schwab seems to be a sound company with good products and service, but it sure needs to improve customer communications!

OK, here it is:

I owned SWPIX when without notice, on September 9, it stopped reported daily prices!

When I called Schwab, I was told it was being "folded into" this fund.

Wouldn't it be nice if they told us aforehand?

In 2009, I guess customer service is just a slogan, not an activity.
