Anyone have an opinion about/researched MXA?

Have considered investing here. MXA is a CEF. Trading at a bit of a premium at the moment. Been around since 2000. Dividend seems to be relatively stable. Just wondering if others have looked here and what they think of it for purposes of having a stable, income-producing investment with some tax advantage.

Cliffva: Just found this fund on i-net (SIT MN Tax-Free) then found my way here. I clicked on the article you referenced, but Yahoo says it's no longer available. Don't go to too much trouble, but it sounds like there was good information in there -- is there any way that you know of that I could access the article either through another internet source or some other way? I also own FIMIX for 2-3 years now. Have found it to be pretty steady income-earner and helpful in a high income tax state like MN.

Cliff, read the article on page 49 in the April issue of Kiplinger's. An interview with Bill Gross of PIMCO. He talks about Muni's.

There are some real buys on the gulf coast of FL right now. Not as warm as southern FL (Aver highs of 60 in January) but a lot better than MN and WI. Perfect golfing weather.

Nice choice, no income tax in Florida (not to mention the weather in February).

I can't decide if I should sell now or ride it down and hope for a bounce. The underlying bonds are OK its just that they are intangled with the subprime crap at the insurer.

Perhaps you're right, however both funds are down about the same YTD (2.8% for FIMIX vs 2.9% for SMTFX) or from their Jan 23 peaks (4.5% for FIMIX vs 4.2% for SMTFX). There is more going on here than just A vs AA, or duration.

I also own FIMIX which has held up better. The differences between the two are maturity and ratings. Maturity: FIMIX is 6.1, SMTFX is 5.4, the market average is 12.21. Rating: FIMIX is AA, SMTFX is A, the market average is AA. Also, I wonder if the concern over bond insurers has more effect on lower rated bonds.

With the fed cutting rates, why is'nt the value of this fund increasing instead of tanking? I thought interest rates and fund value were supposed to move in opposite directions. Is there a problem with the quality of the underlying holdings?
