Frequent gross errors in comparative interactive stock charting, not just quantitative but in direction !
For instance: RYSEX vs IJS:
Feb 17 2004 to Feb 18 2009 RYSEX actually outperformed IJS by 4%; your chart shows opposite i.e. IJS outperforming RYSEX by 6%;
Also: 3 Mo to 2/18/09: RYSEX beat IJS by 8%; your chart shows Ijs beating RYSEX by 5%.

Underperformed the benchmark for the 1 month, 3 month 1 year, 3 year and 5 year periods. For some people that is OK.

You obviously know little about this fund other than short term performance. RYSEX's portfolio manager, Charles Driefus, has a 20 year track record going back to Lazard that is phenomenal. His speciality is deep value micro-cap stocks that he purchases at multiple of EBIT to Franchise Value. Now, many folks do something like that -- but what Mr. Driefus is particularly adept at is deconstructing financial statements and accounting. He sees things in the financials that no one else sees.

Given his strategy, his fund performs particularly well in bad to neutral markets. Look at what his fund did in the last bear market (2000 - 2002). His fund was up dramatically. In double digit up markets, he will significantly participate, but he will not outperform. However, outperformance in down markets and participation in up markets is the key to long term capital growth. The math is easy -- if your portfolio is down 40%, it takes an 80% gain to get back to neutral. Therefore, preserving capital is key.

I HIGHLY recommend this fund. I don't work for Royce, but I am a long-time investor in the Royce Special Equity Fund. I have met Charles Driefus and I assure you that he is a very honest, diligent and hard-working guy who is very passionate about what he does.

Fund is an absolute dog. "Stock selection" issues.

I guarantee that the board of directors will perform its annual investment management contract review as required and will find the performance "adequate" and it will renew the investment advisory contract.

That's OK, if you like to lose money.
