The most up to date list of holdings is 9/30/2008. Given that is less then a month ago that is the best one can do, but I thought I would ask. Does anyone know of more current. That 9/30/2008 list showed he was still very heavy in commodities and other basic materials.

From what i understand this is not a "commodity" fund. Its strategic by nature but was over loaded in commodties and energy.... Unfortunatley never lightened the load when those areas had big profits. It looks like the management team is changing around the investments and pulling back on big sector bets. He is also holding large amounts of cash.If your investment time line in this fund is for a few hours or a few months than you may have a problem.....if you plan on investing for a few years than I think this fund is a great fund.

At the advice of my FP, I purchased a small poition in this fund in early August. It is down 38% from there. Seems to me that given general concensus on an extended recession, any commodity play for the foreseeable future (12-18 mo.) is now a bad bet. (ex-gold) Longer term, pretty good.

Thanks Rick -yep, as i said i am surprised he didnt take any some of these commodity bets off the table. I wish I could be pissed but thats the market - if i want to cry about it I should just buy CD's. I actually bought another chunk yesterday. The fund sits in my IRA so I dont get clobbered in capital gains (when there are some...lol). I am young and could afford riding the waves up and down and add to good investments rather than sit on the sidelines and try and pick the perfect time to re-enter -I'm nnot that good. Obviously I am down but I am taking a logical stance instead of emotional and hanging tight.

S&P hasnt moved in 10 years.....u would be flat as a board. And the last 6 months....he was foolish not moving out of some big commodity bets i agree but what could you do.
graph QUAGX over the S and P 500 Index, and you'll see how its underperformed the benchmark the past six months...also look at the QUAGX chart- its back to 2003 levels (NAV of 16.57 and down 26 % YTD)...also compare its high expense ratio with that of the SPY....i'd rather make my own sector bets, which i did Friday when the VIX hit 76- taking profits today...to each his own. signing off permanently.

I dont know what numbers you are looking at but grossly underperformed?? 10 yr avg of about 18% per year.....This fund has worked out well in my IRA hence the monster capital gains it pays at the end of the yr.I dont know about you but I dont "flip" mutual funds. I find a good manager with a good track record and stick with him. This fund was up until the end of the 2nd quarter - then it just caught up with everything else....Manu should come back strong when the market stabilizes a bit

I have been looking at this fund. I have never bought a load fund before because I just don't care to have 94.5% of my money invested instead of 100%. But this fund's long term record is worth noting.

Do you pay the load on any share purchased because of div/cap gain dist? I might be missing the answer in the company paper work, but I don't see the answer.

well next time instead of making stupid statements and crying how much you are down ask for some insight and you might receive it. Anyone reading the post is down as well. Its not like the market is exploding in other sectors and this is the only bum fund.

The last I found out the fund is almost 30% in cash. The fund is loaded into commodities and thats why we have seen the recent hit in the fund. One thing that Daftary is usually good at is steering out of trouble and minimizing risk. It looks like he missed the mark here and did not bail out of a lot of profitable positions. He was just rated #1 by Barrons survey in aggressive growth and has made top 25 money managers for 9 years straight. I have been adding to my position in this fund for years and plan on staying the course with him....unfortunaltey he has hit a rough patch and I am hoping that he will trade out of it and get some ground back in the fund. If you cant stomach the volatility then you should probably sell.

At this point in time the fund is heavily weighted in energy and commodity stocks. Thus if these stocks take a beating, the fund will go down. It's also the reason that this fund has gone up when the DOW drops 200+ points.

This is a non-diversified fund that can take BIG positions in any sector. It can also short stocks. It has a very good long term record but it can be very volatile.

If you go to www.morningstar.com you can get a list of the top 25 holdings. You can also get this information at Yahoo, but I find Morningstar to have more updated information.

Well look at it two ways --- Yes the load is a bit steep but it does come with performance. Manu manages private money as well at DG Capital Management and the minimum requirement to open an account is 15 mill. The guys track record is incredible.

As for the differences in A vs C as long as its in an IRA account either choice would prob be ok. The only difference if you plan on holding for 5 years plus C shares may be costly. I have owned this fund in my IRA for years and have no intention on selling. The A shares you pay a one time load and then your expense ratio per year. The C you pay 1% percent a year on top of your expense ratio as long as you hold.

Let's shed some light for our readers.....
"Load up the pantry," says Manu Daftary, one of Wall Street's top investors and the manager of the Quaker Strategic Growth mutual fund. "I think prices are going higher. People are too complacent. They think it isn't going to happen here. But I don't know how the food companies can absorb higher costs." (Full disclosure: I am an investor in Quaker Strategic)
