This fund has it's time to be bought and time to be sold. I'm back in and plan to stay a while. My last trip was for a return of 40% not counting reinvested distributions. Total return could be even better for the next 12 months.

Buy this fund if you are seeking to add an inflation hedge to your portfolio. If inflation in commodities rises, this fund will too. The current price seems like a good entry point. The BRIC countries are just getting started which will push commodity prices higher... I think this fund will do well going forward.

This fund from Pimco was launched in late-2002 and was one of the very first widely available commodity funds. It invests in commodity-linked derivatives instruments backed by inflation indexed securities meaning that since they buy derivative products for the commodities (which are much less costly than the commodities themselves) they invest the excess funds in inflation indexed bonds. This fund tracks the performance of the Dow Jones AIG Commodity Index (DJ-AIG) which contains 19 different commodities as shown in the chart.

For some time this was the only fund of its kind available to retail investors but it had its share of tax issues. Up until tax year 2006, the fund had been a bit difficult to work with due to the huge year-end distributions that were paid (with taxes due just a few months later) and the downward share price adjustment was sometimes big enough to result in a paper loss for the year on shares that continued to be held.

However, beginning in tax year 2006, these dividends have been reduced to manageable sizes and they are no longer an issue.

Be careful to note the price adjustment and quarterly dividends paid since the price itself on many web-based charting tools does not give a correct indication of the fund's performance. Always check the "annual performance" or "year-to-date performance" for the most accurate data.

Since its inception, the fund has performed relatively well and, since late-2007 has outperformed its underlying index by a wide margin.

The fund is available in a handful of different share classes. The "C" shares have no front load and a one percent back-end load if shares are sold within 18 months. The selection of the share class is a matter of personal preference - pick the one that is best suited to your time horizon.

Bottom line: If you still believe in the commodities super-cycle, this is one of the funds you should consider.

This is supposed to be a fund that gives you exposure to one of the commodity indexes by investing in futures and investing the remainder in various US Treasuries. My advisor suggested this several years ago as a way to diversify since commodities have negative correlation with stocks. It did well for those first few years as oil rose and the fund was heavily weighted in the commodities index (I think it's the Goldman Sachs index) that has a heavy weighting in oil. However, they ran into a tax problem and had to restructure the fund's investments and it has not performed as well as some of the new ETF's for commodities (look at MOO). You would think with oil near $90 that this thing would be soaring, but it is not.
