I think your right, I sold alot of my SRPIX and bought SRS in the last few days. It trades at very low volume which concerns me a bit. once it starts to climb 10, 20 30% then it will be talked about in various articles and the volume will definately increase. Its almost like getting a free margin loan. I sold 75K worth of SRPIX and bought 1000 shares this week so essentially am getting a "75K loan" at 0% interest. Of course that means twice the risk, but since this is shorting a Real Estate Index I am not the least bit worried. I have been following the Real Estate market in Southern California since I was a child. It did almost exactly the same thing in 1990. Prices went way too high too fast and then they went down for over 4 years. A decrease in Real Estate takes time. This current run up in prices was even worse than in 1990 (because interest rates were so low for so long). Now that the lenders are tightening, the inventories are growing and there are going to be alot of forclosures due to Subprime and Alt-A loans, there is not a senario that I can think of where Real Estate does not drop substaintially (in Las Vegas, All of California, All of Arizona and all of Florida and that is just to name a few). It will drop moderately in regions where the appreciation was not out of control (like the midwest) Look at the charts of the stocks that make up the Dow Jones Real Estate Index. Most of them are up 200, 300% or more(SPG is up 400%, PSA is up 500%, GGP is up 600%, BXP up 400%) in the past 7 years(right before the Nasdaq crash). SPG alone makes up over 6% of the total here is a chart. index.http://www.marketwatch.com/tools/quotes/intchart.asp?symb=SPG&time=20&freq=1&comp=&compidx=aaaaa%7E0&compind=&uf=0&ma=&maval=&lf=1&lf2=&lf3=&type=2&size=1&txtstyle=&style=&submitted=true&intflavor=basic&origurl=%2Ftools%2Fquotes%2Fintchart.asp

Ok, I have also lost a fair amount in this fund, but with some patience we will start making some $$ (perhaps some big $$ soon). Here is my theory:

Take a look a the top 10 holdings (I have them listed below). I also have the links to the 10+ year charts for each of these companies. These charts look extremely similar to the Nasdaq companies back in 2000

http://finance.yahoo.com/q/hl?s=IYR

ASN: (This one is especially bad) http://www.marketwatch.com/tools/quotes/intchart.asp?symb=ASN&time=20&freq=1&comp=&compidx=aaaaa%7E0&compind=&uf=0&ma=&maval=&lf=1&lf2=&lf3=&type=2&size=1&txtstyle=&style=&submitted=true&intflavor=basic&origurl=%2Ftools%2Fquotes%2Fintchart.asp

BXP: http://www.marketwatch.com/tools/quotes/intchart.asp?symb=BXP&time=20&freq=1&comp=&compidx=aaaaa%7E0&compind=&uf=0&ma=&maval=&lf=1&lf2=&lf3=&type=2&size=1&txtstyle=&style=&submitted=true&intflavor=basic&origurl=%2Ftools%2Fquotes%2Fintchart.asp

EQR: http://www.marketwatch.com/tools/quotes/intchart.asp?symb=EQR&time=20&freq=1&comp=&compidx=aaaaa%7E0&compind=&uf=0&ma=&maval=&lf=1&lf2=&lf3=&type=2&size=1&txtstyle=&style=&submitted=true&intflavor=basic&origurl=%2Ftools%2Fquotes%2Fintchart.asp

GGP: (another one that looks really bad); http://www.marketwatch.com/tools/quotes/intchart.asp?symb=GGP&time=20&freq=1&comp=&compidx=aaaaa%7E0&compind=&uf=0&ma=&maval=&lf=1&lf2=&lf3=&type=2&size=1&txtstyle=&style=&submitted=true&intflavor=basic&origurl=%2Ftools%2Fquotes%2Fintchart.asp

HST: http://www.marketwatch.com/tools/quotes/intchart.asp?symb=HST&time=20&freq=1&comp=&compidx=aaaaa%7E0&compind=&uf=0&ma=&maval=&lf=1&lf2=&lf3=&type=2&size=1&txtstyle=&style=&submitted=true&intflavor=basic&origurl=%2Ftools%2Fquotes%2Fintchart.asp

PLD: (another really bad one) http://www.marketwatch.com/tools/quotes/intchart.asp?symb=PLD&time=20&freq=1&comp=&compidx=aaaaa%7E0&compind=&uf=0&ma=&maval=&lf=1&lf2=&lf3=&type=2&size=1&txtstyle=&style=&submitted=true&intflavor=basic&origurl=%2Ftools%2Fquotes%2Fintchart.asp

PSA: (this could be the worst one yet): http://www.marketwatch.com/tools/quotes/intchart.asp?symb=PSA&time=20&freq=1&comp=&compidx=aaaaa%7E0&compind=&uf=0&ma=&maval=&lf=1&lf2=&lf3=&type=2&size=1&txtstyle=&style=&submitted=true&intflavor=basic&origurl=%2Ftools%2Fquotes%2Fintchart.asp

SPG (This is the top holding and the chart looks horrific, there is no possible way this stock keeps going up at its current rate): http://www.marketwatch.com/tools/quotes/intchart.asp?symb=SPG&time=20&freq=1&comp=&compidx=aaaaa%7E0&compind=&uf=0&ma=&maval=&lf=1&lf2=&lf3=&type=2&size=1&txtstyle=&style=&submitted=true&intflavor=basic&origurl=%2Ftools%2Fquotes%2Fintchart.asp

VNO: (Ok, this one takes the cake for the worst looking chart (remember Yahoo's chart at the end of 2000?) looked alot like this if I remember correctly. http://www.marketwatch.com/tools/quotes/intchart.asp?symb=VNO&time=20&freq=1&comp=&compidx=aaaaa%7E0&compind=&uf=0&ma=&maval=&lf=1&lf2=&lf3=&type=2&size=1&txtstyle=&style=&submitted=true&intflavor=basic&origurl=%2Ftools%2Fquotes%2Fintchart.asp

HERE ARE SOME NASDAQ COMPANIES TO COMPARE THE PREVIOUS CHARTS TO:

NT: http://www.marketwatch.com/tools/quotes/intchart.asp?symb=NT&time=20&freq=1&comp=&compidx=aaaaa%7E0&compind=&uf=0&ma=&maval=&lf=1&lf2=&lf3=&type=2&size=1&txtstyle=&style=&submitted=true&intflavor=basic&origurl=%2Ftools%2Fquotes%2Fintchart.asp

Most of the holdings in IYR are that of REIT's and Commercial property - Not residential real estate, which everyone is watching and expects to tumble. I lost quite a bit shorting IYR... I am now realizing that this is going to be a long term drop in real estate prices, not a sudden one like we saw in the stock market. Give it 4-5 years, and we'll see the bottom. As for this mutual fund... I don't see any positive growth for some time until the real estate gets hit hard.
