Oakmark Fund (OAKMX) and Oakmark Select (OAKLX)

Oakmark Fund: Return from March 9 through September 21, 83.7%; year-to-date return, 35%; five-year annualized return, 1.9%. Oakmark Select: Return from March 9 through September 21, 84%; year-to-date return, 43.2%; five-year annualized return, 0.03%.

Readers of Kiplinger.com know why and how Bill Nygren and his mates at the Oakmark funds blew their terrific long-term records (see Where Oakmark's Bill Nygren Went Wrong). Free of such portfolio-killers as Washington Mutual, the Oakmark funds have had a good run in 2009.

Select typically owns fewer than 20 stocks distilled from the broader list at Oakmark Fund. If you believe Nygren & Co. have learned from their mistakes -- and there's every reason to think they have -- you may want to add one of these value funds to your portfolio

Robert Sanborn has been gone for several years now. Last I heard he was running a hedge fund. The fund is Bill Nygren's baby and it has been for some time. Like you I have been thinking that OAKMX may no longer fill a need in my portfolio.

I purchased this fund when its manager (Sanborn?) was being heralded as the best of the value investors. Then after the go-go late 90s, everyone lost patience with him and he went to the list of worst fund managers. He wouldn't touch technology or anything he didn't understand. And he held the line on no more than 20-30 stocks for the portfolio. Fine. That's an approach that should work pretty well in a market such as the present one. But what's this--Oakmark at a new yearly low on the same day the market hits another low.? Where's Campbell's Soup? Wrigley? I think it's time to drop this turkey and invest in a few consumer staples that are paying a secure 4% dividend.

Bill Nygren is the biggest fan of mortgage stocks and stocks that don't move.

He likes Washington Mutual, Citigroup, H&R Block, Time Warner, Texas Instruments, JP Morgan, Black and Decker and MGIC (OAKMX)

He likes Washingt Mutual, H&R Block, Time Warner, Sprint, Home Depot and Pulte Homes from crying out loud (OAKLX)

He's ruined (OAKWX) which showed promise with Washington Mutual, Citigroup, Time Warner, Sprint and Home Depot.

I think he's the only fund manager in the country who didn't see the housing crunch back in July and still doesn't see it today. Not only are those stocks dead money, we have some real potential bankruptcies there. Only thing worse could have been if he bought Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. I urge anyone with any of these three funds to exchange them for OAKBX and OAKGX...Clyde McGregor is a genius and knows how to build a portfolio that does great in both bad and good times.

What we are seeing is the demise of Bill Miller of Legg Mason and Bill Nygren of Harris, two legends shooting themselves in the foot by being so darn stubborn. This housing and credit crunch is for reals but these guys refuse to believe.

The most recent performance of this fund has been very disappointing. I noticed WaMu on the largest holdings list which would have been a major blunder. It may be outdated information and probably too late to sell now. I have been in some Oakmark funds since their inception and the only thing that kills me about Oakmark is they have a hard time admitting when they are wrong on a position and will fall in love with a company and hold it all the way down. Sometimes they come back - and often not. This puts unnecessary headwind into the overall performance. This is called a blind spot when they are in a Value Trap.

The only way they will have any chance of outperforming their peers or ANY index in the future (the last 5 years they have NOT) is if they manage this kind of risk and acknowledge the mistakes – meaning they do something about them, not just admit it in share holder communications.
