What I like about Oakmark generally is the relatively concentrated holdings and great letters to investors. If I want 400 plus holdings why nt just go index ? I can take unrealized losses if I understand managements thought process. I also like that all of the managers have basically 1M plus of personal funds invested. The fees are a bit on high side but not way out of line. By contrast, when my holdings were much more modest I got into Fidelity Diversified International (1991 I believe) great fund, still hold it. But I don't at all relate to the shareholder communications or the vast number of stocks. I want to sell out and go index but I guess with FDIVX the emotional ties are too strong.

Both are good, though I'd have to give the edge to TAVIX, since it seems to have lower risk. For two int funds, a better combo would be TAVIX and PRIDX(T. Rowe Price Int Discovery), since PRIDX would provide more of a growth focus, while still focusing on the smaller int co's(which I prefer, since they provide more divergent performance to the US markets than larger int co's do). Getting back to Herro and his two int funds, I find it interesting that his OAKEX seems to have less downside risk than the larger cap OAKIX--go figure.

Since I got in the fund is down 5%. I am getting ready to put in the middle third of my allocation so I can't say I am unhappy about the one week performance. The final third will go in about a month. I'll sit tight two years and re-evaluate then. I like Third Avenue alot, especially the Value Fund. Never invested in it.

I, too, own both 3rd Ave. international (actually own all 3rd Ave. funds) and Oakmark international small cap value. The two funds have substantially different holdings, but all within the value style. 3rd Ave, has more large caps. I am fairly new to this Oakmark fund, but respect Herro's long term success (despite recent travails). I plan on purchasing more. I also was surprised that Herro found so many companies that I had never heard of either.

I just got in last week. Have been following for over two years (currently own OAKBX). Wanted a small cap foreign fund and like value style. But I must admit I have barely heard of any of these companies the fund is invested in, really relying on the manager on this one. My preference is index funds/asset allocation but I think small cap is one area active funds can outperform. We shall see.

I am thinking of opening a position in this fund, I'm also looking at TAVIX, not sure, which one would be a better fund. OAKEX seems to have invested all it funds and has a 30% invested in UK vs Tavix which has some cash position and a large chunk invested in Asia (ex Japan). I am concerned that UK markets seem to be experiencing similar trends like the US...

Looks to be a great choice for someone looking for a fund that might correlate less with the US markets than a foreign fund that holds large cap companies. I like the value style in this category, since small foreign growth funds are way too volatile. David Herro has a great reputation as well.

It has been an OK investment, I bought in 2001 and have held since. It has returned decently over that time. This was a down year overall for the fund.

This is really a longterm fund, it is not designed for any quick money. But for those looking for a Small Value International fund, it has performed really well longterm.

Currently it is heavy Europe(Great Britain), then Pacific Rim(mostly Japan) so there haven't been the huge emerging market returns like some ETFs and other Mutual Funds.
