This fund has been one solid, huge disappointment. What a great premise it was. 4 independent, reputable, reliable fund managers each get 25% of the funds to invest as they chose. Seemed like it made great sense. Woops!! Big mistake!!

Here's proof. Go to http://stockg.com/FI_picks.htm and pick "monkey". Go to basic chart for the random stock that the monkey picked. Put MSILX in the compare box and click the 2 yr performance chart. Time and time again you'll find that ONE MONKEY makes better picks than these 4 BRAINS.

Go ahead. Take the monkey challenge. Wonder how much money these managers are getting paid to donate their precious time to this stupid fund. Obviously it's nothing more than a bleak part-time nuisance for them.

Thanks. Fortunately, I had read that it was going to give a large distribution and decided to buy it out of a non-taxable account. However, I have mostly owned stocks and all of the mutual funds I have owned over the years did not distribute gains in this manner. It was somewhat surprising to see how this worked from the drop in price to the distribution. Glad I bought it before it distributed, on the one hand, but buying it the day after would have been about the same cost.

I still don't understand how this fund is distributing its "profits" when it merely dilutes its shares. The title of the first post, "Realized Gains ! 18%" is somewhat misleading. Not sure exactly why we are jumping for joy?

Here is a URL for an explanation of mutual fund distributions: http://mutualfunds.about.com/cs/taxes/a/distributions.htm
The event is revenue neutral, as they simply lower the per-share price by the amount of the distribution. If you were unaware of this before, then you are very lucky you hold MSILX in a tax-deferred retirement account. Many novice investors will buy into a mutual fund in a taxable account right before a distribution is declared, which forces them to pay taxes on money they never personally made - not a lot of fun!

I am not sure you understand. I contacted Master Select and asked them to explain. I have a 1000 shares and my account reinvested $4000 in new shares but the account balance dropped so the total value of the account remained the same. This is unlike most other mutual fund accounts I have which when they distribute capital gains (short or long) actually increase the overall value of the fund. According to Master Select the fund will increase as the shares, since there are more now, increase in value. At this point, it is not an increase in the total value ($) of the fund, but an increase in the number of shares only. Fortunately, I have it in a retirement account or the capital gains would have been taxed which is kind of crazy since there has not been an actual increase in value ($) of the fund. It will be interesting to see how this works over the next year.
