I think that what is happening is that the NAV of this type of funds must be tied/indexed to the spread between treasury and commercial bonds, which has been increasing lately. In other words, people with an apetite for risky bonds with high yields now demand a higher yield. Our fund needs to lower the NAV to attract these investors, since the income is fixed.
I do not see a direct connection with subprime (i.e. this fund does not loan our money to these bussinesses, although I cannot tell if they have directly bought subprime MBS or other radioactive material), although the increase in the spreads of other fixed income instrument wrt treasuries is related to the ongoing subprime and ALT-A implossion.
I wish the managers of the fund had explained what is going on in the fund web page, in particular I would like to know how the NAV is set.

After the last few weeks it's nice to see no loss for the last two days. Maybe the subprime fiasco/risk aversion is now mostly digested into the NAV of this type of fund and the worst is over ?
If the NAV stays within a nickle of $11.84 up through 8/13, I'm keeping this thing.

I submitted a response a few days ago before I spoke with someone at Highland Funds. They've sold all of the top 5 holdings except HCA. MOVI was their #1 holding and it's now in forbearance. They say they don't have any holdings that have gone into default. If that's true, I would also like to know just what the %&*% is going on with the share price. I'm losing approximately $1,500.00 a day and this was supposed to help fund my retirement. Is there a bottom for the share price or is it just going to free-fall until there's nothing left??????????????

I spoke with my etrade financial advisor on Tuesday morning. I am a conservative investor depending on dividend income and was not at all happy with what I was seeing. He said that the decline in subprime loans is affecting this fund but actually none of its holdings had gone into default at that point. Meanwhile they are buying new loans at lower cents on the dollar and the dividend payout is going up. He says he owns the fund and expects that the NAV will rise back in 1 to 1 1/2 years. I was ready to bail on at least part of my holdings at the next redemption date (Aug 15) but I'm afraid that with others heading for the exits at the same time the NAV will be even lower so I plan to hang in for the long haul. I compared this fund to a similar one at Fidelity and the chart decline was almost exactly the same so it's not just Highland. I hope he's right. If I had funds to invest right now I would consider buying more.

I am also in this fund. To the best of my understanding the fund is currently having their holdings repricing and obviously many are getting downgraded and NAV is getting hammered. I haven't heard of much default yet but with the subprime fall out these risker below market loans are simply worth less today as buyers for higher risk/yield dries up. I think the dividend is safe and if/when the credit spread mess clears up, if you are a long term investor this fund could still be for you.

What I'd like to know is if MOVI has been in trouble for the past few months, what are the fund managers doing. There are 3 listings in the portfolio that are negative. Did this just happen??????

I was happy with the fund until the unit price started diving a few weeks ago for no apparent reason. What a joke this fund is losing 0.5% per day and giving back a little better than that at the end of each month. Supposedly the fund managers had a conference call with my ETrade advisor yesterday morning and indicated that they believed all of the downside was out of the unit price. Then the fund took another 5 cent hit yesterday following by 6 cents to the downside today. What a bunch of lying bastards? I just hope some of my money is left on 8/15 so I can dump everything.

I have had it fopr eight months just to recoup heavy front load expenses. The price hasn't appreciated much, if any. I didn't like the lack of liquidity (can sell only four times a year) and a maintenance at 1.35 percent which cuts into the return. Some of the holdings are risky especially in subprime sector. I have sold a major part of it. Will appreciate any comments at: Rajendradheer@gmail.com

I too am fairly happy with the return. My wife purchased this fund about 14 months ago. Initial fees were high compared to other funds. It took some time to recoup that hit...

Safety does concern me too. Given the makeup of the fund, news about lenders having troubles isn't settling. That said, I'm not very well informed, and would appreciate as many good opinions as people are willing to offer.

For now, I'm going to hold this, and hope the gains continue to offset the initial cost.
