I tried that route. Spoke to several and wound up going with a CFP who was a military reservist (for some reason I was comforted by that).

He turned out to be either stupid or unethical, but either way he was a complete hack. I specifically told him, several times, I wanted nothing but no-load mutual funds. What did he do? He put all the money in load funds. When I told him to turn right back around and sell and reinvest according to our instructions (ie, we laid out the philosophy, he picked the funds) he said it was too late and we'd lose even more money due to early redemption fees. I said he could eat it but he told me it was a misunderstanding and since I hadn't given him written instructions, who's to say who was right or wrong?

I stewed for about 90 days before telling him to shift our stuff over to Vanguard, and for those funds he couldn't to just sell them. We were done with this clown. This time I made sure to put it in writing. What did he do? He chose not to sell the stuff we couldn't transfer over because 'he felt it wasn't in our best interest'. That was the final straw. I sent him the email I was going to send to the SEC, and miraculously he executed the trade immediately, and made us whole on the loss out of his pocket (the funds had gone down in the interim).

Sorry, I learned my lesson. This stuff just isn't rocket science.

* Invest as much as you can afford to save
* Follow simple recommended allocations with no-load, low-cost funds
* Gamble only with what you can afford to lose (ie, fringe plays or individual stocks)
* Periodically rebalance
* Forget about it the rest of the year

Why pay someone a few thousand a year (1% of investments) for that?

"Trailing Yield?" Is that a meaningful statistic? The lower the current price, the higher the trailing yield is. The capital gains distribution, in particular, boosts the "trailing yield" by increasing your numerator and decreasing your denominator, eventhough (as I understand it) the capital gains distribution does not really affect the fundamental value at hand. If you remove the effect of the capital gain, it becomes slighly more meaningful (IMHO). That result is +4.9%. But even there, we are ignoring the change in the NAV over time. Adjusting for that loss, we are looking at a +3.1%, relative to the 12/19/07 NAV (if I've calculated correctly).
