As of right now, the fund is outperforming the S&P500 over the last 11 years+ and even with it out to 1995. This is the best environment for its performance - high VIX. I don't know if it will last, but I'm still unsure whether to keep this one in the stable.

One more point as we move forward in the market.

I like this fund as a steady grower vs. Index equity funds due to the decreased Volatility, and option premiums are juicy as the VIX has been moving between 19 and 26, which can provide enhanced returns in sideways to slightly uptrending mkts. And offer enhanced protection in down markets.

Moving forward I like this fund over a bond fund. Although, we may see one more Fed Funds rate reduction (as of this writing), and dividend returns while the market bottoms. At some point, when the Fed tightens and interest rates do rise bonds won't be the place to be as their prices will fall. During that bottoming to upward turning mkt, this style of investing should do well. When we are in full bull mode other equity funds or sector funds should out perform. But we are a long way from that time.

I don't think we are at an ultimate bottom, but I like today's bullish action within a bear market. I put a 7% position to work in GATEX today 9/11.

I also like the statistic that the mutual fund market has been experiencing outflows nearing 2002 levels. The public is finally puking their positions.

I like this fund's strategy very much in these market condition. Working collars within this volatile market condition seems to be as safe as possible, while still giving exposure to equities.

I have been playing neutral to short via option positions since last summer. And all the while hanging on to 80%+ cash. I think this may be time to deploy a little capital.

Many investors totally miss the point about this fund as well as buy write strategies. Seeing some of the comments on this fund are striking. GATEX is one of the best and longest running buy/write low volatility funds you can buy that doesn't come wrapped in a hedge fund. The whole purpose of this fund is to lower volatility and achieve a higher rate of return over time than a standard bond fund. Consider this fund as a compliment to your portfolio and compare it to a traditional intermediate bond fund for diversification purposes.

wshang...."permanent underperformance" is well put. The fund's approach is designed for lower volatility but I found you pay too high a price on the upside for it. In down markets it's safer, as recent history has shown. I found that over a mult-year timeframe it delivered about 9% for a fee of 0.9% while "the market" was up nearly 20%. I fired my financial advisor for this record. Conservative is one thing....foolish is another. His take was nearly 1% on top of the GATEX expenses. Do you see a pattern here?

That' true, it had a little less than half the loss -7% versus about -16% from peak to trough (assuming we've seen the bottom).

My only misgiving is it correlates perfectly with the S&P500, so there is no diversification benefit. In some ways, you end up with permanent underperformance but never losing much and outperforming the bond index. I've got some money in this fund, but I'm still not convinced.

Gateway has decided to sellout to a company that charges high fees and has the authority to change the investment strategy whenever it wishes, without needing the shareholders' consent.
