Fidelity has a habit of changing managers in the sector funds. They last longer in bonds and some domestic I understand. I think the manager serves an apprenticeship at the fund or they move a manager into a fund that they may have run. One has to go my the long run track record of each fund which is based on the market. They probably have bench marks from other family similar funds to gauge performance.

I also measure all my funds and stocks against the Vanguard Total Market fund. I also own the chemical fund and have owned the materials in the past. I purchased the chemical fund as the market was going down but am still underwater. As I had it in my Roth I am not as concerned at this point. If you were still monitoring chemicals you would notice a 10 week rise for the fund. I haven't added to it at this point but if it still outpaces Vanguard Total market I may do so in the near future to get some upside. I monitor all my funds and take off positions so that my average own price remains above the going NAV. I did that with my Energy, ,Energy Svcs, and Latin America. I am still up about 15-25% in each fund at this time. Problem always is when to add to any position in this market.

Just did a review of my stats. I sold chemicals when it went under for me. I am looking both at chemicals and materials to buy but not sure if the time is right. As of today chemicals is about 14% above its 52 wk low and materials about 11% above low. My benchmark is the Vanguard Total Mkt (have used it forever) is 2% above it's low. I am really trying to know when to jump in. Have made no decision except that I love these 2 funds.

The history of this fund looks good and it is composed of some great Companies, Monsata. Mosaic etc. My only concern is that the Lead Manager has only been there since January/08. What do you THINK????????

>>Is there rationale for chemicals to continue upward?

I've been asking myself a similar question lately. I developed a sector trading system, which had signaled me to buy this fund 3 months ago. The fund has been doing well (+20%). The system has not signaled me to sell it yet. But I am debating if I should ignore my system for an exception and sell the fund now or stick to my system and keep the fund until it signals a "sell". I think I am going to stick to my system so that I can test it for a full cycle. By the way, my others 3 funds generated by this system are also doing well. So far so good. Let's see

I see Chemicals as a commodity sector. Recent comments prognosticate a bubble in commodities. Is there rationale for chemicals to continue upward? Today (6/3) with the overall market down Chemicals hit a new high and basically one of a few Fidelity Sector funds to be in the green. Your thoughts on Chemicals from here.
