All health care funds took a big hit that day, including medical devices. CNBC & other news networks broadcasted that our govt is trying to sneak in socialized health care initiatives into the different spending bills. Health care stocks reacted to that.

Did not catch specifically what those initiatives were, but IHI (medical devices ETF) & other health care ETFs dropped like a rock after those news reports. Did not think the new admin would try to pass any health care initiatives this early, esp. with all the spending going on to stimulate the economy. But the bill is in the Senate now. Health care stocks do not like the idea of the govt getting too involved in running health care.

We are in a second leg down now. Last fall was only Phase 1. Phase 2 is starting. Almost everything will get hit now, including health care stocks, until toxic assets are removed from the banks & a thorough economic plan that makes sense is passed.

I agree with "BGates2087" - if you want some exposure in healthcare, this could be a long term winner.

Even with U.S. healthcare reform - equipment will still be needed.

Try buying at intervals of 3 months to spread out your cost basis, (i.e., pain when it drops) and think long term - at least 5 years. Now that you have a position, you can add as little as $250 in a taxable account, or $100 for an IRA.

Been my plan for several years, and it's working out fine - even with the latest drops.

Lots of "boomers" retiring over the next few years!!

Just my 2 cents - happy INVESTING.

FSMEX was one of the last great funds to hold onto gains for the year & one of the last to drop. But since then, it dropped like a rock.

It's probably not the fund's fault, but it dropped through my trailing stop, so I had to sell it. Will miss FSMEX, but the trailing stop is a disciplined sell I must do.

Agreed. People will still need medical equipment no matter who's president. Right now FSMEX is doing over 7.25% better than PRHSX, because medical equipment is usually less volatile than the other health care sub-sectors.

PRHSX owns sectors in the entire medical spectrum: Biotech, Pharma, Medical Equip, Medical Delivery, etc. It's a more diversified health care fund than FSMEX. But when things go bad in the markets or in the health care sector, medical equipment usually holds up better than the other areas.

If people want a health care fund with lower volatility than the rest, FSMEX is the one. Even though it focuses on just one slice of the health care pie, it's the least volatile slice.

Owned this fund all year, and it was the last one I own to drop below zero. In the 2000-2002 bear, S&P 500 dropped about -48% and FSMEX was up 44.45%.

This time the S&P 500 had a top to bottom drop of -42.7%, its peer PRHSX dropped -33.34% top to bottom, and FSMEX dropped -26.6% at its worst. It actually dropped more than that in 2002, but finished that year down only -6.24%, when the S&P 500 was down over -22%.

So this fund drops less than the major indices, less than its peers, and catches up pretty quickly after its drops.

Its best year was up 50.37%, and its worst year down only -6.24%. FSMEX has only 1 down year in the past 10 years, compared to 3 down years for the major indices. 2006 it underperformed due to a new fund mgr, but that fund manager left & it's back to normal. This fund often deviates from major indices & goes up while the major indexes go down. 2000 & 2001 show that, along with the first 8 months of 2008.

Demographics favor continued good performance long-term, no matter who wins the election. If Obama wins, there might be a temporary overreaction down in the health care sector. Congress might want to change the health care system, but the govt already spent $700B or more on the financial system. So the money won't be there to change the health care system for quite awhile. FSMEX is a keeper.

I'm a young invester (late 20s). I bought a little of this fund in April 07 and it has returned about 13%. I'm happy. The way I reason is, the companies in this fund are all creating medical supplies (beds, syringes, etc). There will always be a need for this. As baby-boomers come to retirement, the need will become greater and these companies should do well (unlike big pharma who depend upon FDA/government regulations). So I plan to keep this fund for the long haul.

If all the talk of the recession is true, then health care and this fund should benefit as health care is considered a safe haven during such times.

The one thing I'm curious to know is if these fund should invest in health care/etc in international countries. Emerging markets are booming and the standard of living of people in those countries are rising. With that comes more wealth and probably more health problems (people eating junk food etc). Thus the medical care industry in these countries should benefit in the long term as well. Any thoughts?

This fund will move again when the time is right.......I've been in since the $10 range......and have enjoyed the ride!

One thing that is different about this fund that I've never seen.........fully 20% of the fund is in ONE stock! MDT.....Medtronic. I don't mind, but the fund manager must think a WHOLE LOT of MDT to put so many eggs in that basket! MDT is just about to takeover a multi-billion dollar spine tech co. in Europe........so it will be HUGE in size in the near future................retiring baby boomers will make this fund jump over the next few years!

Nice move! It's 800 million in assets nobody even knows about it. I feel also that the international fire as sparked out also. I have owned Dodfx for years excellent so I decided to move substantial amounts of a different international fund in my 401k towards domestic large cap growth/value. I know Fidelity funds quite well and personally equate this to FICDX! Which was owned at sub 1 billion in assets and sold recently March of 2007. You guessed it FSMEX I have had it going since end of 2005. Looks like I started early but thats the way I like it! You my friend have the best risk/reward fund in the Fidelity stable! I have no problems at all owning this puppy into 2010! That is how confident I am of the sector going forward! I am not huge fan of Fidelity but there are some niche type funds they have that I will endorse. Excellent cap gains ok expense ratio but sweet r2. When the pressure drops 2009 you will be even happier to have FSMEX. Yeah...I blew the next 10.00 run up on Ficdx but going from mid 20.00's I have no problem getting off a ride with a smile! Good Luck, nice performing years are coming!!!!!!

I shifted 30% of my 401k into FSMEX in early 07, thinking international funds were peaking. Haven't made much money here yet; maybe I shifted too soon. Anybody have an opinion on when things will pick up for FSMEX?
