I'm not crying I was making a valid point. First of all SGOVX is a Mid Cap Blend fund according to Fidelity so it's not exactly apples to oranges. Both funds objective is long term growth of capital after all. It's not just this fund that has lagged but most value funds have lagged growth funds this year. I think that is worth mentioning no?

I'm just not sure having 75% of your assets in Western Europe and Japan is a recipe for success these days. Like I said before the track record is outstanding but that doesn't mean what worked for them in the past will work going forward. Then again if the market tanks again I could be very happy that I didn't sell this fund. Only time will tell.

agb, you are 100% on target. This fund was never intended to be a barn burner. It holds a high % of precious metals for stability, and that makesw it somewhat adverse to the market of stocks. That's why it is fairly stable in down markets. 2008 was its first down year, I believe. OK, one bad year, hard to argue with all the market turmoil. But to hear other people cry about it, ....jeesh.

You're comparing apples and oranges when you compare SGOVX and JAOSX. The first one is a small/mid cap value fund while the second is a large cap growth fund. Each has different objectives. If you're willing to accept the risk inherent to growth funds when compared to value funds, by all means go with JAOSX. Accept it's high standard deviation and bear market decile. It's up almost 56% year to date, but it lost almost 53% last year. SGOVX is up a little over 10% this year, but lost only 21% last year. Both are leaders in their respective categories on a 10 year trailing return basis. SGOVX, in fact, has a higher 10 year return. Which type of fund you choose depends on your long term objectives and risk tolerance. (Also, SGOVX is available on a load waived basis).

I'm not disputing the track record. What worked in the past won't necessarilly work in the future though.
The returns have been only "reasonable" in the past 15 years? The annualized return has been about 10% over that time (i.e., cumulative gains of 300%), which puts it in the top 1% of all mutual funds in existence. Sounds like you don't even recognize when you have a good thing going for you. Most investors have lost money in stocks during the last 15 years, often due to the short-sighted and fickle nature demonstrated in the 1st post above.

FYI, there is a 2% redemption fee on shares held less than two months. After that, you can redeem shares at NAV.

I agree, the performance has been disappointing in the past nine months or so. Overall, the return since I've been in the past 15 years has been reasonable.

I paid the front end load when I bought it in 1994, and, as I understand the prospectus for the Class A shares, will get clipped another 2 % when I sell.

I guess that is just an extra cost of an era when most of us were dependent on brokers for purchase of our financial products!

I know this fund is pretty conservative and will lag a bit in a bull market but this is pretty bad. This fund is up only about 6% YTD. I own another foreign mutual fund (JAOSX) which is up about 50%. That's a pretty huge difference. When the market is up this fund is often times in the red. When the market is down this fund is usually still down albeit by a little less. I'm thinking about jumping ship......

So what happened is pretty simple really, this company keeps it's records for profit on the company by paying a Dividend out of the price.

Remember a fund has assesst in all classes: cash, bonds, stocks.

This fund takes the aggregate gain over a year, and at the end provides a dividend and the option to keep the same shares. this is good for fixed income investors that rely on a dividend. The rest that have dividend reinvestment/retirement investments get the dividend rolled back into the fund, (initially at cash value)

In this case, approximately a 15% one. For folks that rely on dividends for income can keep their money

By monday the rest will have had the ~$4*sharesowned rolled back in in cash, and rereflected in the balance. IE you will own more shares of SGOVX at $23 than were owned at $27.

So noone has really explained the mechanics (thanks for that). Only comments are "paid a dividend, smiley face." Some of you are real pieces of work. Anyway, so lemme see if I get this... a dividend of 4+change is paid and conversely... the share price goes down 4+change. How is that a div... and why bother? If anyone can explain the mechanics of how this is a good thing (along with the mass amount of confusion it must cause with thousands of shareholders for this fund and any other fund that does it). I suppose it wouldn't be so bad if it was transparent... but dropping the share price 5-10-15% in some cases and not making the application of the offset/ div immediate must PO a heck of a lot of peeps.
