I purchased this fund as well from First Command when I was serving in the USAF in 1992. At that time I knew little about mutual funds. I stopped putting money into the fund in 1996 with the exception of my IRA contributions. I sold the last of my shares in March 2003 with a capital loss. This fund is lousy, and First Command is a company designed to profit from selling loaded funds. Every time they contacted me, they attempted to sell me a loaded loaded fund. This was the first and LAST loaded fund that I will ever buy!!!! Don't buy loaded funds!

I know what you mean. I've lost about 40k since Aug. I just didn't put all my apples in one basket like the sales rep wanted me to. I put some money in other places. Last year or two they started pressuring me again to put more. I just didn't feel right. Things were just jumping around too much and I could see the housing market and what they were doing. In the 1990 I was in real estate sales while going to college and lately they were giving houses to those that I could have never qualified. I knew sooner or later there were going to be forclosures like 1990s. So I never saw my sales rep. Glad about that. I just didn't think it was going to be this bad. I'm too chicken to get out now. I want my 40k back. Kinda like gambling in Vegas. They will probably take it all. I think it's going to be rocky for the next 2 year but I going to wait and see what the Feds do. I think if FDETX loses it all then we are all (all markets) screwed.

The way it was explained to me years ago, is that by making you pay the fees in the first year, it keeps away the short term investors.
I agree with all about having to pay up 50% in the first year is theft. Especially when the peramid lecutre is given that says you should start paying yourself first. So why did we need to pay USPA/IRA now First Command first?

Ok, now about the long term investment... Trends are trends so I am going to buy the max today! History says we can make $4.00 per share in the next 18 months. So why not buy now at $8.00 per share. Either way, 59.5 years old is the age you can take and run without penalty.

This is by far one of the worst plans I've seen out there. This set up, FDETX, has consistently lost money and will continue to do so with the market losing momentum. Look at how many managers have been canned or quit over the past few years. Amazing how this IRA is able to lose over $2 a share in one day.....simply amazing to the point everyone should dump this wound that won't start hemoragging. This IRA is like a scene from the Titanic, you know it's going to sink.

I started in 1994 in the 15-year plan. I too am not overly thrilled with the performance, but the market hasn't treated us too well over the last 6 years. I'm hoping the share price goes up this year. I'm still in the positive even though selling off about $5K worth in 2003 when buying a home. Appears you have done well in tripling your money is about 19 years. The dollar cost averaging over time helps and systematic investing appears to have worked for you. It has for me as my account is worth about $35K at current share price. I hope my 2,900 grows even more this year. I'm hoping this year the $12 price will grow to at least $15(pre-2001 prices)...that will be another $10k in growth for me. I can only hope. $10k growth on a $35K balance isn't too shabby if you ask me. I may sell off some this year to put in a IRA for tax purposes, but plan to keep the rest. I also invest in a 401K so this FDTX is really my emergency cash source if I ever need it.

...glad to see some discussion on this fund...in 1988 I was 21 years old when I signed the 10 year contract and completed it without a missed payment. I increased the face amount and have continued investing sporadically and without doubt, came close to bailing out of this fund many times. Invested to date $45,000, never took a withdrawl, worth today $159,000. ..not an exciting fund, but a good display of systematic investing at work...hey, as young, single man in my 20's, I could have done worse things with my money FOR SURE!

Hey,
I started my a USPA plan in 1974. $150 a month, put a total of $44K in it. I have taken over 270K out. Paid for my kids college, a couple of expensive weddings and good down payment on my retirement home. Today, I invest differently; but back in 74 I had just returned from SEA and new NOTHING about investing. All I knew then was that the USPA rep convinced me that putting $150 mo. in a plan was better than putting it in a savings account. Things of course were a lot different then. USAA was just an insurance company and you didn't have dozens of finance magazines on the bookshelf or an internet to check your portfolio every day. So at least for me, the plan was highly successful.

A mutual fund payout of dividends and capital gains is a one day posting event to transfer accumulated assets (all the dividends and capital gains made by the stock holdings, buying and selling by the fund manager, etc).
