Billy, This message was started on 12-10-08 the price of FKTFX was $5.96. We are now at $6.57.(up 2% since your message 10 days ago) That is a 10% gain in about 4 months not including the divi's that I have been re-investing at low prices, giving me a total of 12.5% gain in 4 moths. Too bad all you did is congradulate yourself about the past instead idetifying a very oversold investment. See you back above $7.00 a share in the summer.

That is not the only risk! We have seen only some of the risk. The biggest risk is loss of equity due to increased interest rates. If CA needs more money (and we will) they will have to pay more to get it. Some municipalities are now paying up to 6.5% tax-free. The reason this fund has dropped is not because of any hedge fund or such thing. It is because the interest rates on the bonds that are in the fund are low and it will take YEARS for them to mature and be replaced by the higher yielding bonds.
Also this fund was constant for 2008 in the low $7 range (I used $7.20 in the following) it is now at $6.45. That is a 10% reduction in your money (not counting the 2+% buy-in.
As rates continue to go up the value will continue to go down. Does anybody think rates are going to go down in the futre? I thank God I got out at $7.09 and took my losses then, rater than use the buy and hold philosophy.

Whatever buddy, If you sold before the drop then why are you here on this message board?
I have never heard of any US Gov't agency not paying off their debts.
This is an incrediable time to be adding for the long term. This will be back up and over 7 by next summer and still paying 5% tax free divi. All assets right now are at rock bottom, including bonds and FKTFX.

"the only risk is if the municipailty cannot repay the obligation when the bond matures"

Exactly why I sold all my shares in this fund before it started falling. The State of California is going to be facing serious financial difficulties in the coming years. How does that go... "We're all subprime, now."

There are a few solid theories why munis and muni funds are dropping. Mark to market is one of them, hedge fund liquidation is another, the downgrades of the insurers (MBIA, AMBAC) is yet another. A compliation of all three is likely the cause. The funds dividend is still strong and consistent. I would say pick some up at these prices. You will be looking at near 5.5% yield tax free, on a AA bond fund. NAV will return eventually. As the individual bonds near maturity, their values will approach par, the only risk is if the municipailty cannot repay the obligation when the bond matures.
