After enduring 50-80% losses with U.S. Global Investors, Ken Heebner's funds, and even Bill Gross's Pimco fund (PCRDX--still being recommended by Kiplinger's!), I am elated to be in a fund that shows me single digit numbers. I don't even care if they're red or green. Apparently some shareholders don't realize how lucky they are to be invested in FBR Small Cap.

It did start early; and now the bottom is not callable. The earliest I can see for government to stimulate inflation is April or May 09 but more likely July or August. Gold futures could turn up between Feb. and Mar. oil will probably languish longer.
This fund has a huge percentage of its assets in cash. That's why we only went down 2.46% today when the typical financial stock went down between 6 to 12%!

For now I'm glad it is cushioned in this manner, but at some point I would like our cash % to go way down so we get the full force of the upswing. Of course, who the heck knows when that will be --- it doesn't look like it will happen any time soon.

My favorite managers tend to be in the small to mid cap and international, and include Joel Tillinghast(not sure spelling) at Fidelity Low Price (sorry closed fund, buy FLPSX if it opens), Mark Yockey at Artisan International (ARTIX), Cliff Greenberg at Baron Small Cap (BSCFX), and Robert Rodriguez at FPA Capital (FPPTX) unfortunately a loaded fund. If you want to avoid the fund managers consider Dimensional Funds. Great emerging market, international, and small cap funds developed out of the University of Chicago by Nobel Prize winning economics professors. Unfortunately need a money manager to allow purchase, but that helps stabilize the funds. Very low internal charges, smart people running the company, price to book strategy.

I don't come to this message board often, but it is good to see a board that has individuals talking about the stock or fund and not pushing a web site. This is the time to buy this mutual fund. Not sure about today after the big jump in financials, but as I said in my last posting averaging into this fund will only be a great approach to investment here. Small caps and financials have been way down. This the time to get in, not out. You are going to be seeing excellent returns this year if you bought after Feb. Hope you didn't sell at the lows in July.

For those like me who bought in earlier this year thinking the turn around would come sooner rather than later, I'm wondering: How long are you planning to hold? At what point do you cut your losses and go with something that's working? I really do think this fund and its manager will come back, but I'm wondering how much pain is in store for us before we start seeing more consistent green. Thanks.

Well, you have to look a bit beyone the NAV to know what a fund is doing. The NAV drops when they distribute capital gains, dividends, etc. It has dropped about 25% from Jan 1, 2007 to now. On the other hand if you look at the years from 2000 to 2004, the fund markedly outperformed its category during a time small cap stocks and financials outperformed the market. It was in the wrong sector and the wrong portion of the small to large cap spectrum over the past year or two. Buy low, sell high, not the reverse. Now is the time to get into financials, and perhaps a bit early on small caps. This is the right fund to average into over the next couple of years. You can sell, but I am buying.

I have watched this one over the past 5 years, and thought this was a good time to put some into the financial sector. This plus the Vanguard Financial ETF seemed like a reasonable approach. I've been overweight energy for some time, and remain so. Always favor the small caps, so this one seems ideal.
After the slide in the markets today; if oil reserves grow TOO much in March, it could start a real tumble in oil, followed by gold, and silver. Possibility of OPEC cut may offset some. Grains should carry on near highs, or rebound first if they fall. Hard to figure the break point.$87 maybe; there or above, bounce back , fall below, cascade down. Just how hard have inflation and the credit crunch squeezed the consumer? I figured the start of the oil bust for Sept. to Nov., but it may start early.

This looks like a nice place to hide a prediction concerning the markets, and in particular Can-Roy's. Mortgage and credit defaults will continue at near record levels. This will have a limited downward yo-yo effect on oil and gas as unemployment rises very slowly.
O/NG inventories could be quite high in April. In spite of spring maintenance at the refineries, I expect gasoline stocks to be high also and prices to drop. Tax Returns and Tax Rebates will fund a rebound in summer vacations and travel beginning in May and lasting till Sept. I expect to 'time in' in April and 'out' in July or early August. This message exists purely as a means of documenting my success or failure.

Ralph,

I hope you are correct on this fund. It has been painful lately. I'll give Ellison the benefit of the doubt at this point since this is fallout from the subprime mortgage mess. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out. Indeed it is a great day.

Normally, I am a trend follower, and technical investor. But in a portion of my long term savings I keep a steady group of the best funds for the long term. This is one of those. The manager of this fund is one of the very few managers out there who has my confidence to hold for the long term. His successful history with Fidelity and this fund, the value approach he uses, and the inherent stability of the small cap financials he buys all work for the long term. IMHO. Good investing and trading to all, and God Bless you all too! It is a great day.
