"... continue buying THEIR crap..."
Actually it is OUR crap produced by them:

http://www.themodernbusinessworld.com/2008/01/ford-and-china-marry-for-convenience.html
"Ford Motor Company has also made a larger commitment, as well as many other U.S. manufacturing operations, to outsource parts operations to China"

Who is responsible for the quality, Ford ("as well as many other U.S. manufacturing operations") or the Chinese? Here comes the double digit IQ part: It is the US manufacturers who go for the cheap. US manufacturers set the quality standards, and if better quality is 50cents more to produce, US manufacturers say to do it the cheap way. And that goes for the toy disaster too.

Starting with the idiotic Reaganomics, most US manufacturing has moved overseas. I am old enough to remember the start of it and I remember screaming at the TV news " You idiots! Don't you see where this will go - there will be no manufacturing capability in US, no skilled labor, no good middleclass jobs!" And here we are now... Don't blame the Chinese.
By the way - I don't think I have ever purchased any Brazilian "crap". What do you buy that is from Brazil?

Yuan value is artificially pegged by action of the govt of china. If it's allowed to float, it may go up. In that case, Chinese exports may decline. Other nations with free floating currencies, which had lost business to China may gain some of that back. US has asked China without success to let it float freely like other nations. China acts protectionist like underdeveloped nations and yet sends a probe to the moon- like few developed nations. It can get away with this because of its nuclear stockpile- being a big bully! Example: Taiwan currency floats. According to wikipedia "In the history of the currency, the exchange rate as compared to the United States dollar (USD) has varied from over 40 TWD per 1 USD in the 1960s to about 25 TWD per 1 USD around 1992. The exchange rate has been around 33 TWD per 1 USD in recent years". Today's rate: 1 Taiwan dollar = 0.030994 U.S. dollars. Not so with Chinese Communist Yuan.

mutual funds pay dividends, short term capital gains and long term cg's several times a year. The nav of the fund is reduced accordingly. The fund is worth the same after the event as it was before.
If it is a taxable fund, ie, not an ira or 401k, you owe tax on the distribution. You will get a 1099 reflecting this from the fund.
This is pretty ordinary activity. Before you invest, you should know these things. It is called due dilligence.

Sell half today and half by December. See my other post responding to "China" message. You've made good money and 2008 will be troubling in these geographies. Beijing is going to have a sharp pullback in 08 for the olympics and it will cause a Y2K-like reverberation. This will be exacerbated by possible Hillary situation, or other unknown presidential bid. Stay safe until 09 when foreign markets will get interesting again.

Be careful about the expectations. I have about 10% of my 401K in this fund but watching it with trigger finger to pull out. I travel in India and China frequently and the risk is high. They can't sustain this acceleration, it's going to burn out or have a crisis. In India I recently asked some colleagues "has anyone modeled how far in the future you could sustain 10%+ growth" .... no, they haven't, but they believe it can continue indefinately. Tata is planning to build many new car plants, but the infrastructure can't handle it. If they build more cars, it will become gridlock. It isn't feasible to triple the number of drivers in India. Watch out.

Depends how long your planning on staying in.

Although right now is a very high point (as well as when the original post was made) it can still go higher. Probably not another 40% but you can't say never.

For a short term trader this would be a horrible time to buy but short term traders often buy high (after they are assured by the fantastic returns) and sell low (after they are demoralized by the horrible losses)

buy and hold with a timed buy strategy will do ya good.

short term traders; wait till all the other short term traders freak out and send everything lower for a second time!

Sorry to hear that, you should wait for a while because it is too high now even it's a top performance fund. Fund manager did a pretty good job in last 3 years. But it doesn't mean you will make money from it because the entry point is the KEY!

In charting FEMKX, EEM, and QFFOX, the price action looked very similar.

Did you mean to say that FEMKX is more expensive to buy because of the management fee vs. that in an ETF?
This is a no load fund for Fidelity investors.

I have been looking for a similar emerging market fund that has performed much better and except for the more specialized ones, such as the Latin America fund, FEMKX had done admirably.

This fund tracks the MSCI emerging market index. The manager doesnt really mean much. It basically tracks the EEM EFT with less volitilty and a slightly higher fee. Its worth it if you do periodic investing, otherwise you are better with the EEM and a little more volitility.
