Commodities are hitting new highs each week. This fund came down in the market correction, but the question is, can the equities that make up the MS commodity index (^CRX on yahoo). Continue to drop if the basic materials they sell to make money keep going higher? Lets first look as the equities that make it up... http://finance.yahoo.com/q/cp?s=%5ECRX

Okay, so One possible answer is is "Yes" - that is, if the cost to derive whatever commodity they are selling goes up faster than the commodity itself, thus insuring a loss even at high prices since the cost to sell the commodity at a high price is higher yet. The stock starts losing $, and it tanks. This scenario, played out to its end, means companies losing money will stop deriving and selling whatever commodity they are losing money at... Well, what happens then when demand for the commodity continues?.... hmmm the commodity will adjust dramatically higher given drop in supply (See Econ 101, inelastic demand), thus insuring supply comes back... and with that comeback, will come stock prices too.. And why is demand 'inelastic'? well, it really is not, but with China, India etc, we have a new 'equilibrium point' between supply and demand...

And that leads to the other possible answer: "No". The equities will not continue to tank with a market tanking for other reasons (read, "financials dying with derivative toxic waste, 10 yr treasuries start tanking). So these equities will not continue down so long as prices of the commodity they are selling insure a higher, and higher profit (even when cost to produce it is rising, it is not rising as fast as the commodity itself) ....

If you look at the list of equities in the CRX, some will lose. But most will gain.... And that is why I am here for now...
