The Big Trend
The mark-to-market waiting game will dominate at least the first half of 2008, as real estate investors hoard their cash and wait for the moment to strike--when values achieve something like a bottom. That moment will likely not come until at least the first quarter of 2009, although some smart investors will start to grab things on the way down and then wait for values to catch up with them on the rebound. In other words, anyone who thinks things will return to "normal"--i.e., early 2007 levels--is soon going to be mistaken.
