OAKBX is down from 26 to 21 in 2008. Not a bad performance given the overall market was the worst since the Great Depression with massive 30% to 40%+ losses on the major indexes and even larger losses in many mutual funds, including The Ariel Fund. OAKBX was a good place to park money given what has transpired and what holders of OAKBX have now.

The Ariel Fund did great coming out of the 2001 recession and the 2000-2002 market decline. I am looking for similiar gains in 2009 and 2010 from The Ariel Fund.

Reading this discussion is like listening to whiny baseball fans. Joe Torre used to remark at how people described him as a genius---until he lost one year. Suddenly, he was an insipid failure.

Ariel certainly had a miserable 2007, but Rogers is no less smart or dumb. The tenets of value investing are that when others panic, you keep your head and go on a buying spree. Last year, Berkshire Hathaway did great, while Ariel sucked. But in 1999, Ariel beat Berkshire by 18 percentage points, and it beat Berkshire in 2003-2005. Did that mean Warren Buffett was no longer a genius? There are different styles of value investing, and over time, both Rogers and Buffett have had superior performance.

I would no more bail on Ariel than I would Berkshire.

I definitely wouldn't put a "buy" recommendation on this fund.

I have considered dumping this fund for a while. The expenses do not justify the returns that are comparable (or worse) than broader market and index funds. However, inertia has kept me in it. I agree that it might not be a good time to "change horses midstream." But I have to admit that I am not sleeping as comfortably as I would like.

I saw a recent article wherein they mentioned that they've gone overweight into the financial sector because of the subprime mess. That definitely has to be part of the reason for their recent dreadful results. It is clear that they've gotten in too soon. The question is whether I have the intestinal fortitude to stick with this for the long haul when the financials get back on track. Or do I take my lumps and move my money now?

It's galling to pay an "expert" more in fees than he delivers in return on my investment.
