With short term CD's under 1%, this looks like a better option with dividends and growth.

I statrted with this fund at it's peak, and watched it drop, but it has paid dividends regularily, and since I am in the building shares stage, the drop from 67.00 to 35.00 has been good.
The best way to play this fund is to open an account at the minimum deposit and add what ever you can each month. That has always worked long term. I personally think that this is one of the best funds out there right now, although a little heavy in financials. Redemptions have been high, but so have all other mutual funds as investors ran to the sidelines with cash. Sooner or latter they will come back. This fund is down only 30% YTD, compared to 40% and 50% for other funds. Just remember, buy low sell high. It’s hard putting your hard earned money into a mutual when the market is low, but that’s how you come out ahead in the long run. I think it is unrealistic to see DOW 14,000 again for many years to come, IMO. However, if we go into a depression, all bets are off.

I invested in the fund during early 2007. At the time it was trading at $63 per share. Due to the dividends I have earned, I am now breaking even on my investment.
For those who don't have the stomach for volatility - and I am basically one of them - FDIC-insured CD's are the best - 4% return. Lousy, but certain; a sure thing and no worry. If I can't get at least a 10% return I'll go back to CD's. I want to get paid for the worry and aggravation. This fund returned 9.78% for the year ending 12/31/07 This year??
If it only makes 4% I won't be hurt - BUT, I can't stand to actually LOSE money! I'm the same at the casino - great fun when I win, horribly depressing when I lose. My wife is just the opposite - takes it in stride, SHE bought this fund. I'm a CD man! Like my mexican workers say when I get upset, "no panda el cunico!" (Don't panic) :-)

Hello Mr. Victory

I am new to this message board, but I assume it is used to pass stock information. I have a few questions about the American Funds Capital Income Builder mutual fund:
1) What do you think the annual rate of return will be for this fund at 12/31/2007?
2) I have tried to recalculate the YTD Return*: 5.43% (listed on Yahoo's finance site on 05/19/2007), but have not been able to reclaculate this percentage. How can this be done?
If you or anyone can answer my questions, I would really appreciate it, thanks!
