Interesting times. As small caps normally lead an economy out of recession, so now we must ask, is the recovery here at last? Artio U.S. Microcap shows a nice rebound off the bottom on year to date, but still not back to it's orignal inception price. And hard times may not be over. However, buying in now on a cost averaging basis could be promising. Everything depends on the management. Since I am the only one here, I can use this board, for now, as my personal diary, and I must admit it, I am really watching the small caps...another hard downturn is still possible before the rebound, but over the longer haul, the potential is in the small firms.

Does Julius Baer deal in rubbish? Not normally.

Does Julius Baer deal in rubbish? Not normally. The markets are in a horrific shape. It is time to recheck what Julius Baer Microcap A holds, and assume the fund manager is well aware of the changed environment that now exists. This could still be a big money maker but it will take time now.

6 months in, it has not hurt me to wait

At this moment I seem to own this board, so it can act as a diary for my thoughts on this fund and the market in general.

At this moment it has not hurt me to wait. I have watched this newly issued fund for six months, and it has essentiallly stayed in a narrow range near the bottom of it's price since issue.

What will turn it around? The fund seems to have originally been designed for higher flying times, and surely the holdings will have to continue to be adjusted to reflect a recessionary period. Can the manager make the change in outlook needed, and how long of a recessionary period are we looking at?

Much of my faith in the fund would be faith in Julius Baer. The do not have a history of issuing dogs. Given the world economic situation, Julius Baer has been a model of stability so far, but who knows what tomorrow will bring. Are we looking at a 1970's style long term recession, or a "short and deep" ditch which we can ride across and be in for some nice fast returns on the other side?

If anyone wants to join me here and make some "guestimates", I look forward to hearing from you. In the meantime, I will continue to use the board as my investment diary. Thank you. RC

A gain of more than one third puts us back at the inception price!

JBA has suffered badly. To make a full one third gain plus on this fund would only put us back at the fund inception price.

Julius Baer is not a firm that deals in junk. Given the small and speculative nature of this fund, can we assume there is nothing wrong with the fund per se, but that the timing of inception was bad?

If that's the case, we could see an upside that could gain returns that are far above the market averages.

The question: Where is the bottom on the markets and on JBA?
Right now, if you go by the message board, I seem to be the only person who even knows it exists! That would bode badly for a big rebound, but I am sure there are a few other folks out there....what do you think, are we near the bottom, or do we have even more to lose and thus more to gain on the rebound? Tell me what you think....:-)

Julius Baer U.S. Microcap A, a way to beat time?

I am interested to hear what type of investors buy or are interested in the Julius Baer U.S. Microcap A fund. What draws you to this fund?

Allow me to speak first to get the ball rolling:

I was looking for a potential high growth fund to "beat time". That is to say, I began investing later in life, and due to some bad timing (or bad luck, depending on how you look at it), have not had great returns. I was fully invested at the time of 9/11/01 when the Twin towers attack occured, and lost a considerable amount I had gained prior to that point.

The Julius Baer company has a long respected reputation, and the Julius Baer Microcap A (from now on, JBA Micro for short) seems like a way to potentially gain time on the market, albeit at considerable risk.

The fund has been down in the early going since it's inception, but may have good upside potential, very fast, in the recovery period after the projected upcoming U.S. recession.

We'll see, but now it's your turn. Tell me why you think JBA Micro is a possible buy, and why it attracts your interest.
