Usually it's ex-dividend. If there is a large disparity between market movement and mutual fund price, that's almost always the answer.

 You can verify this by checking that you received an additional number of shares which, in toto, do not substantially change your total worth.

You'd think the funds would apprise you of that fact when it happens but for some reason they never do.

And - don't worry too much about lowered bases - the basis is adjusted upward by the amount of the dividends & capital gains. I once convinced myself mathematically that this does indeed constitute a 'push'. So theoretically at least, when you sell you'll make up for the taxes you had to pay on the fund's s/term and l/term capital gains. This is a rotten feature of mutual funds but it fits right in with the dictum that the little guy has to pay for the big guys' lifestyle.

Meanwhile, be glad you're in one of the very finest funds around. I have made a nice pile on this one over the past few years. Pretty impressive performance whn you consider the corruption and general debacle of our economy in general.

Can anyone here please tell me why this fund (and several others I've researched, including ARTMX, DODGX, etc) seem to exhibit historical price drops in the last 2 weeks fo December when the indices did not have such a bad day? For example:
27 Dec 2004, 3.48% drop (DOW down 0.23%);
27 Dec 2005, 3.56% drop (DOW up 0.17%);
26 Dec 2006, 8.70% drop (DOW up 0.83%);
26 Dec 2007, 11.85% drop (DOW down 1.42%).

Am I missing something? Not all funds have this historical pattern.
Thanks in advance for any insight.
cheers.

Here is an interesting article about Julius Baer:

I remember being astonished noting the degree of anger expressed in that prospectus; the Artio spin-off, though, is not fully explained. JB is obviously furious regarding current U.S. fiscal policy. I'm not an economist; any educated insight into what is going on is warmly appreciated.

I am wondering the same thing.
